52 Books in 52 Weeks

Normal people probably don’t keep a list of every book they’ve read.  Less normal people keep an annual list which starts on January 1st.  I keep an annual list which starts on my birthday, July 11th.

The list originally started for my own purposes.  I wanted to get a sense of how diverse my reading habits were and see if I could spot any trends.  I later found that sharing the list with my friends who read makes for interesting conversation and recommendations.

When I intially started keeping track of my reading habits, I was reading somewhere around 40 books a year almost evenly split between fiction and non-fiction.  As my life has become increasingly busy, that number has been falling steadily, as has the percentage of non-fiction books I read annually.  This year, however, started off with a vacation on Cape Cod followed by a vacation in Maine and I finished several short books during each trip.  While recording the books I had finished, it occured to me that I was way ahead of pace for a book a week and so I decided to attempt the 52 books in 52 weeks challenge this year.

The purpose of the challenge is to encourage people to read more books.  Also, because part of the challenge is writing a review for each book, I will be thinking a bit more critically about the books I’m reading  Hopefully, the reviews will be intersting to others as well.
